Privacy at Ginquill
Last updated: 2026-10-12
Ginquill is a reading app. It has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics and no advertising. This page describes exactly what the shipped app does with data.
What stays on your device
The books you start, how you started them, your pauses, which entries you have read and your settings are stored only in the app's own storage on your iPhone. They are not uploaded anywhere and are deleted when you use Settings → Reset all reading or delete the app.
Location
If you allow it, the compass asks iOS for your approximate location (about one kilometre), rounds it further to two decimals and uses it only on the device to compute the direction and distance to a book's narrator. It is never stored, never sent to us or to anyone else. You can decline and choose a city from a built-in list instead; that choice also stays on the device. The compass heading comes from your iPhone's magnetometer and is not stored.
What leaves the device
| Data | Collected | Purpose | Retention | Third party |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bundle identifier, app version, a device identifier | Yes, at each launch | The launch check that tells the app whether a newer version is required or available | Not stored by our server; the request is answered and discarded | Cloudflare (hosting of ginquill.info) |
| Push subscription identifier (OneSignal) | Only if you allow notifications and push is enabled | Delivering occasional editorial notifications (for example, a new book on the shelf) | Until you turn notifications off or delete the app | OneSignal, Inc. |
| Vendor identifier (identifierForVendor) | Used as the device identifier above, and as the OneSignal external ID when push is enabled | Recognising the same install; it is not linked to your name or any account | As above | OneSignal, Cloudflare |
| Map tiles | Requests made by Apple MapKit when you open the map | Showing the map behind a narrator's route | Governed by Apple | Apple |
Entry notifications themselves are local: they are scheduled on your iPhone and never pass through a server. OneSignal's location sharing is switched off in the app.
What Ginquill does not collect
No name, email, contacts, photos, microphone or camera access, no browsing history, no advertising identifier (IDFA), no analytics events, no crash reports, no attribution data. The app does not track you across other apps or websites, so it never shows the App Tracking Transparency prompt.
Notifications
Notifications are optional and the books arrive either way. You can turn them off at any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Ginquill, set quiet hours in the app, and choose whether a notification shows any text.
Embedded web content
In rare cases, when a version of the app is no longer supported, the app shows a page from ginquill.info inside the app. Like any browser, that embedded view may keep standard cookies or local storage for the page; we do not use them for tracking.
Children
Ginquill is rated 13+ and is not directed at children under 13. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
International transfers
The launch check is answered by Cloudflare's global network; OneSignal processes push data in the United States. Both act as service providers under their own data-protection terms.
Your rights and deletion
Because we hold no account or reading data, there is nothing to export from our side. To delete everything on the device, use Reset all reading or delete the app. To ask OneSignal to delete a push subscription, or for any other request (access, objection, deletion), write to support@ginquill.info; we answer within two business days.
Changes
If the app's data practices change, this page changes with it and the date above is updated before the new version is released.
